Considering Veneers? Read This First!

Having a white, bright smile makes you look instantly more attractive. In fact, studies have shown that smiling can boost self-esteem, improve confidence and even make you feel happier. With all those reasons to smile, why would you not? Maybe because your smile isn’t exactly the way you want it to look.

For some people, this can cause anxiety and even prevent them from smiling. They may even cover their mouth when they smile. Does this sound like you? Then you may want to consider cosmetic dentistry or, more specifically, veneers.

Veneers are thin sheets of material (usually porcelain) that cover the existing tooth and create the appearance of a whiter, straighter smile. In fact, you can even use them to cover minor chips, cracks and gaps in the teeth, all the while improving its color!

How Long Do Veneers Last?

One common question we get about veneers is how long they last. Unfortunately, they probably won’t last forever, but with proper care, they can last up to 20 years. This means brushing them regularly (twice a day, for at least two minutes at a time), flossing at least once daily, and attending bi-annual cleanings and checkups to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy.

It is also important that you protect your veneers when you’re eating. This means you may want to avoid eating crunchy foods or biting into crunchy foods with the teeth that have veneers on them.

Can Veneers Change The Color Of My Teeth?

Simply put, yes, they can! Veneers are an excellent way to cover staining or discoloration of the teeth and can create a whiter, brighter smile. Best of all, they won’t stain like natural tooth enamel, so you can enjoy your favorite foods like wine, coffee, and chocolate without the fear of staining your teeth.

We don’t recommend smoking with veneers or without, but even smoking should not stain your veneers.

How Are Veneers Installed?

Veneers go on the teeth very easily. First, some of the natural enamel is removed to make room for the veneer. Then the veneer is shaped to fit your tooth and cover any tooth blemishes, and then it is installed over the tooth. Patients can get one or multiple veneers, and the procedure can usually be done over one or two visits.

Can Veneers Replace Braces?

While you can’t use veneers to totally replace braces, sometimes they can make the teeth look a bit straighter and more even. If you do need braces, you can still get veneers after your orthodontic treatment, but it is recommended that those with severe crowding or dental problems still get braces to correct these issues.

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

It’s hard to say how much veneers will cost you, because this cost will vary based upon your individual situation. You may only need one small veneer, or you may choose to get a mouthful, which would, of course, change the cost of the treatment dramatically. If you are interested in getting veneers, your best bet is to schedule a consultation where we can give you an estimated cost of care.

What Are Veneers Made Of?

There are different materials used for veneers, depending on the brand and situation. For some, porcelain veneers are a better choice, and other patients may opt to go with a resin composite veneer. These materials may affect the cost and may wear differently, so be sure to do your research before deciding which one you want to go with. We can also help recommend which type of veneer will work best with your individual mouth.

Who Can’t Get Veneers?

If you’ve come this far, you may be wondering if you’re a good candidate for veneers or if there is anyone who can’t get veneers. Unfortunately, there are some situations in which they cannot be applied. This includes patients with receding gums, tooth decay, gum disease, or those who have bruxism (grinding of the teeth). For those people, we may recommend something else, such as dental bonding, but this will depend on your individual situation.
