Coffee Vs Energy Drinks- Which is Healthier?

Not a coffee drinker, but still need a pick-me-up? If energy drinks are your morning boost of choice, you may notice more than increased levels of energy happening.

There are many different types of energy drinks on the market today. They all have their own unique ingredients and effects. Some contain caffeine, some do not. Some contain sugar and other additives that can be harmful to your health. The most popular type is Red Bull, which contains both caffeine and sugar. Other popular brands include Monster Energy, Rockstar, Amp and Celsius. 

Energy drinks are designed to give you an extra burst of energy throughout the day. They are typically marketed as being safe and healthy because they only contain natural ingredients. However, there are several side effects associated with these drinks.

Caffeine: Caffeine has been shown to increase blood pressure, heart rate and body temperature. It also causes anxiety in people who don’t normally experience this feeling. In addition, it increases alertness and concentration. This makes it ideal for people who work long hours or study hard. However, excessive use of caffeine can cause insomnia, headaches, stomach upset and nervousness.

Sugar: Many energy drinks contain high amounts of sugar. These drinks are often marketed at children, teens and adults alike. Although they provide energy, they also contribute to tooth decay and cavities. Excessive consumption of sugary beverages leads to obesity and diabetes.

Other Ingredients: There are many other chemicals found in energy drinks. Some of these include taurine, guarana, ginseng, ginkgo biloba, yohimbine and ephedra. Taurine is used to treat muscle cramps; however, it can be toxic if taken in large quantities. Ginseng is known to improve moods and mental performance. Yohimbine is used to help lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. Ephedra is used to raise metabolism and decrease appetite. All of these substances have potential side effects when consumed in excess.

Effects on Teeth: As mentioned earlier, energy drinks contain various chemicals and additives that can harm your teeth. Sugar is one of the main culprits. When ingested, it contributes to tooth decay by increasing acid production in the mouth. 

Acidity is another issue with energy drinks. The acids produced from these drinks erode enamel, causing damage and weakening the teeth. When your teeth are weakened, your enamel is affected. The enamel part of your tooth is the hard, outer protective layer that protects your teeth from bacteria.

Enamel is the hardest substance in the body and is naturally white, but over time, it turns yellowish due to exposure to acidic foods and drinks. Over time, the enamel will wear away and become thin. Eventually, the enamel may completely disappear, leaving a hole where the tooth was once protected. If you consume too much soda or drink energy drinks regularly, then you are putting yourself at risk for developing dental problems.

How To Prevent Tooth Decay From Energy Drinks

The best way to prevent tooth decay is to brush your teeth twice daily and floss every night. You should also avoid consuming sugary drinks such as soft drinks and fruit juices. Instead, opt for water or unsweetened tea. Avoiding these sources of high sugar content helps to keep your teeth strong and healthy.

If you’re not ready to give up your energy drinks, we recommend: 

1. Limiting consumption. Try drinking only two cans per day or less.

2. Drinking water. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to wash away the energy drink from your teeth. 

3. Wait to brush. You may think brushing after you drink your energy drink is a great idea, but you should wait at least 30 minutes. This is because energy drinks soften your tooth enamel and make it easier to brush off.

4. Use fluoride mouthwash. Fluoride helps protect your teeth against decay. If you do choose to drink an energy drink, try using a mouthwash containing fluoride to rinse out any remaining sugars.

5. Consider using whitening toothpaste. If you want to whiten your smile, you can use whitening toothpaste instead of regular toothpaste.

6. Use a soft brushing technique. Gently rub your toothbrush along the gum line to remove plaque buildup.

7. Floss daily. Flossing removes food particles trapped between your teeth and prevents cavities.

8. Visit your dentist regularly. Schedule an appointment with your dentist so he/she can check your teeth for signs of decay.

9. Keep an eye out for symptoms. If you notice any symptoms of tooth decay, visit your dentist immediately. These could include bleeding gums, pain while chewing, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, and swollen gums.

Is Coffee Better for Your Teeth Than Energy Drinks?
